This booklet was produced in 1993 as a basic introduction to the Somali people, designed primarily for service providers and those assisting Somali refugees in the United States. It covers the entire scope of the Somali experience, from ancient history as the "Land of Punt" through the colonial occupation and the devastating civil war of the 1990s. The work emphasizes the homogeneity of Somali society while noting the central role of clan lineage.

The history section traces the entry of Somalis into the region and their conversion to Islam, as well as the 20-year insurrection led by the Sayyid against colonial powers. It also discusses the rise of the revolutionary regime under Siad Barre and the subsequent opposition that led to the state's collapse. The book includes practical sections on Somali values, art, poetry, and food.

A significant portion is dedicated to the Somali language, including its sound system, grammar, and writing system, which was officially adopted in 1972. The booklet also features a glossary of Somali terms and a list of language resources for English speakers.
