Georges Révoil

Georges Révoil was a late-19th-century French explorer and traveler specifically known for his focus on the Horn of Africa. He conducted two major voyages to the Somali coast between 1877 and 1878, positioning himself as both an actor and a witness to the "savage" and often difficult terrain of the region.

Révoil was highly regarded in contemporary scientific circles, receiving a "benevolent welcome" from various geographical congresses and societies in France and abroad. These organizations encouraged his efforts to map and document regions that were, at the time, largely unknown to the Western world.

In his writing, Révoil demonstrates a meticulous approach to recording his daily existence and interactions. He utilized photography (though noted as controversial to some local religious sensibilities at the time) and drafting to create an "authoritative and reliable" account of the East African landscape and its inhabitants.
